Painting began organically for me. A friend of mine lived in an apartment block, one of those buildings with concrete stairwells that are grey, blank, and foreboding. Those blank walls cried for life, for color, for shape. I began painting those walls; shapes, color, light. Later I realized that it was not just the walls that needed color, it was my hands and mind that needed expression. Since those days I have worked on my craft through sleepless nights, stained hands, academic training, and classroom teaching. But my work is still organic and my own personal expression. It springs like nature, and like nature anyone can see what they want in my work. For this reason, I believe, my work appeals to anyone that takes the time to view it; to take it in one line and one color at a time. Rather than strictly analyzing the artists purpose or message, the viewer can decide what it means to them: what it tells them coming from their background and viewpoint. In this way, the viewer has their own organic experience of self expression which makes them a part of my work.
